For the architects out there, this one’s for you. Non-architects, this is still very relevant because you get to observe architecture every day, and I have a challenge for you. Last year I witnessed the architecture students’ process. I saw the brainstorming sketches at the beginning, to final pinup presentation at the end. Architects don’t sleep, it’s fascinating. Through their lengthy hard work, I made the connection that architecture is intertwined with public relations. I’m not surprised. If you think of “public relations” in a self explanatory way, it can be applied to anything in life.
Architects are similar to PR spokespeople. They’re from a firm working for companies. Except instead of writing or speaking to get a message across, they design and build. The architect builds a relationship with the company, together they create an image for space.
I visited the Skyline in New York City for my first time last summer. It’s a primary example of how a space has been created for leisure and tourists but also work, making it a space that contributes to society and its occupants.
You’ll notice, buildings are often designed for their brands. Look into the headquarters of one of your favorite companies and see if their building reflects the culture of the company. One of my favorites is REI because they provide all the outdoor gear I could possibly dream of. Their mission is to “inspire, educate and outfit for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.” As a result, their headquarter’s design advocates sustainability to take care of the outdoors that their customers value so much. Their building includes solar panels, lights that automatically dim during the day when the sun is brightest, and clothes are made out of sustainable materials so that customers support the environment when they support REI.
I often forget that everyday structures and objects in my life are all intentionally designed and made with love. This week I challenge you to be mindful of your daily routine and find meaning in the spaces you occupy.
